What's right twisted pair ethernet cable jacket matterial for you?

Often customers are still confused about what material they need for sheathing/Jacket when purchasing, we have summarized the following information in the hope that it will help you in your procurement.

What is the purpose of cable sheathing?

The cable sheath is the first line of defense of the cable against moisture, mechanical, flame and chemical. More specifically, the sheath provides protection for the shield and conductors inside the cable.

During and after installation, the sheath protects the cable from mechanical damage. In addition, different cable sheaths provide protection against moisture, chemicals, UV and ozone.

What cable jacket charateristics do you need?

Common cable jacket characteristics to consider when choosing an the cable that's right for you are listed below:

Cable Jacket Characteristic

Benefit of Characteristic

Flexibility

Ease of use and long-term flex life

Chemical resistance

Life expectancy during exposure to chemicals

Low-temperature flexibility

Suitability for arctic or winter climates

High-temperature survivability

Determines peak and ambient operating temperature and contributes to ampacity rating

Flame resistance

Safety and flame spread

Approvals/Compliance

Suitability for a given application/jurisdiction

Color

Identification, safety and appearance

Types of ethernet cable jacket material

From the perspective of the global market, the main materials currently in use are the following:

LDPE: Low Density Polyethylene

Mainly used for the jacket of outdoor ethernet cable. Polyethylene can be stiff and very hard, however low density PE (LDPE) is more flexible.

Moisture resistance is excellent. Properly formulated PE has excellent weather resistance.

PVC: Polyvinyl chloride

Mainly used for the jacket of indoor ethernet cable. Polyvinylchloride can be formulated to function in a variety of environments and applications.

It is usually low-cost, flexible, fairly rugged, and a flame/oil-resistant material. PVC can be made in either a matte,glossy or slick finish.

According to the National Electrical Code (NEC) , the most common Ethernet cables are classified as CM, CMR and CMP in order to distinguish between different levels of fire resistance.

UL/NEC-Approved cables may also be C(UL)/CEC-Approved as communications cables meeting the requirements of the Bi-National Standard CSA C22.2 No. 214/ UL 444 and Section 60 of the Canadian

Electrical Code, Part I (CEC). The C(UL) cable designation (and its meaning) would be one of the following:

CMP — Cable meeting CSA FT7 or NFPA 262 (UL 910);

CMR — Cable meeting UL 1666;

CM — Cable meeting UL 1685 (UL 1581, Sec. 1160) Vertical-Tray;

CM is the most basic cable jacket rated for general use. CMP is higher rated than CMR. The most significant difference is that they are suitable for different situations with various types of airspace.

Both CM and CMR cable jackets are made from relatively inexpensive polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Price and flexibility are the upsides of PVC,

but the PVC material can release thick smoke and dangerous gases like hydrogen chloride in a fire. While the CMP cable jacket is made from either a low-smoke

polyvinyl chloride (PVC) or a fluorinated ethylene polymer (FEP).

LSZH: Low smoke zero halogen (ALSO CALLED: LSOH,LSFH & OHLS).

Mainly used for the jacket of indoor ethernet cable.The LSZH cable is slightly inferior to the Plenum type and commercialized mostly in Europe.

PUR: Polyurethane.Mainly used for the jacket of industry ethernet cable.

Polyurethane is very elastic, with a very high memory, which makes it ideal for coil cord applications. It is abrasion resistant, has excellent flexibility in low-temperature environments, and performs well when exposed to oil and ozone.

SHF1: a thermoplastic outer sheath which is halogen-free and causes minimal smoke in case of fire.

l SHF2: a cross-linked thermostable outer sheath which is halogen-free and causes minimal smoke in case of fire. SHF1 & SHF2 mainly used for the jacket of Marine ethernet cables.
