FTTH Product Selection and Stocking Guide for Distributors

Build the assortment by network position, route conditions and interface data—not from a universal starter list. Use the product table to add verified ZION and HELLOSIGNAL options to a working selection list before preparing an RFQ.

A useful distributor stock policy starts with sales history, installed-base interfaces and replenishment evidence. Product selection must then be checked against the FTTH architecture, installation environment and acceptance requirements.

Segment demand before selecting SKUs

Separate customer missions first. A contractor connecting new homes does not buy the same basket as an ISP maintenance team or data-network integrator.

Do not combine these demand streams into one average. Record customer, service area, network owner, product revision and final use for every sale.

Build a three-layer stock model

Layer 1: local fast movers

These are products with repeat demand, stable specifications and acceptable shelf or handling risk. Possible categories include commonly approved patch cords, pigtails, adapters, small terminal boxes, selected PLC splitters and proven drop-cable variants.

The exact connector type, polish, length, cable construction and packaging must come from order history. “SC connector” is not a complete SKU definition.

Layer 2: central buffer and restoration stock

These products justify stock because replenishment delay could stop installations or extend an outage. Examples may include approved closure configurations, replacement trays, matched sealing parts, restoration cable and ODF consumables.

Buffer stock should be linked to named networks or product families. An incompatible closure on the shelf is not emergency stock.

Layer 3: project-to-order products

High-count feeder cable, unusual fibre counts, special constructions, large ODFs, private-label products and project-specific assemblies should normally remain configurable until the project specification, quantity and delivery phases are known.

This layer needs supplier capacity and a clear configuration process more than local physical stock.

Classify stock with demand and predictability

Use two views together:

  • ABC value or volume: identifies which items account for the most sales, margin or operational importance.
  • XYZ predictability: separates stable repeat demand from intermittent project demand.

An AX item may deserve local replenishment control. A CZ item may remain project-to-order. A low-sales emergency item can still be strategically important, so management should be allowed to override the statistical class with a documented service-risk reason.

Calculate reorder decisions from real inputs

A simple planning relationship is:

Reorder point = expected demand during replenishment lead time + approved safety stock.

Each term needs operating data. If lead time varies, use the measured distribution rather than a single best-case promise. If demand is project-driven, use confirmed schedules and probability-weighted opportunities instead of a consumer-goods forecast.

Do not publish a universal “three months of stock” rule. A short-lead patch cord and a project-specific high-count cable have different cash, storage and obsolescence risks.

Control variants before they multiply

FTTH inventory expands quickly when every attribute becomes a separate combination:

  • fibre count;
  • aerial, duct, façade or indoor construction;
  • cable diameter and strength member;
  • connector and polish;
  • splitter ratio and package;
  • closure cable entries and tray count;
  • terminal capacity;
  • patch-cord length;
  • label language and private packaging.

Create an approved variant matrix. New variants require a customer or installed-base reason, a forecast, a substitution review and an exit rule.

Select FTTH products by network position

The table below applies that network-position method to product families available from ZION and HELLOSIGNAL.

Choose the row first, then confirm the listed project inputs. A product page identifies an available family or model; the final order code still depends on the cable, connector, capacity, environmental and packaging details stated in the RFQ.

    Stock compatible kits, not isolated parts

    Subscriber activation kit

    • approved drop cable or pre-terminated drop;
    • terminal or outlet where in scope;
    • patch cord and adapter interface;
    • fixation or entry accessories approved by the installer;
    • labels and installation record.

    Closure replenishment kit

    • approved closure body and configured trays;
    • matching cable-entry and sealing parts;
    • splice protection and identification items;
    • documented compatible cable-diameter range.

    Small distribution-point kit

    • box or ODF configuration;
    • adapters, pigtails and splitters as designed;
    • controlled port plan;
    • installation and test checklist.

    Selling kits reduces forgotten components, but only when every interface is validated. Do not bundle nominally similar components without checking dimensions, optical interface and installation method.

    Compatible FTTH activation closure and distribution kits

    Make documents part of stock availability

    A physical item should not be marked “ready to ship” if the customer requires documents that are missing or expired. Maintain, by SKU and revision:

    • datasheet and approved drawing;
    • product and packaging marking details;
    • applicable test reports;
    • certificate or declaration where required;
    • batch or lot traceability;
    • installation instructions;
    • warranty and nonconformance contact;
    • language version needed by the channel.

    Confirm the required document language, revision, test-report format and product marking with each customer. A product is commercially available only when its technical documents are usable in the customer's approval and installation process.

    Prevent slow-moving and obsolete inventory

    Review at least these conditions:

    • no sale within the distributor's defined review period;
    • product revision changed;
    • customer approval expired;
    • network interface migrated;
    • packaging or language no longer accepted;
    • supplier document set is incomplete;
    • stock is allocated to a cancelled project;
    • storage or handling condition is uncertain.

    Assign an action: retain for a named maintenance need, return or reconfigure where permitted, transfer to a compatible application, discount transparently, or write off. Never relabel a technically different product as an approved substitute.

    Prepare the product list for quotation

    The interactive list is a scope shortlist. Convert every selected family into an orderable line item using the approved drawing or datasheet.     • required datasheets, test reports, certificates and installation documents.

    Set stocking quantities from the distributor's SKU demand history, supplier lead times, installed interfaces, target service levels and restoration requirements. These inputs allow ZION to review a practical starting assortment and replenishment plan.

    Distributor data request

    Before proposing a starter assortment, request:

    1. twelve to twenty-four months of SKU-level sales if available;
    2. active customers, networks and service areas;
    3. approved connector, splitter, drop and closure interfaces;
    4. current stock, aged stock and committed project stock;
    5. target service level and acceptable replenishment time;
    6. required certification, document languages and packaging;
    7. forecast projects with probability and delivery phase;
    8. private-label or branch-packing requirements.

    That dataset can produce a commercial assortment. Without it, a “starter list” is only a hypothesis.
