Technical Guide for ADSS Single Sheath & Double Sheath Aerial Fiber Optic Cables

 Introduction

ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cable is a type of Aerial fiber optic cable that supports its own weight without any metal in the construction. With an all-dielectric design, it can be installed along / near overhead power lines without any fear of induction from high voltages.

ZION Communication has two types of ADSS cable designs on offer:

  • ADSS-SS (Single Sheath) – Span 80m–150m
Lower span and lower cost. Light construction. Suitable for MV lines.

  • ADSS-DS (Double Sheath) – Span 200m–400m
Double sheath for high strength. All weather conditions. Suitable for Shorter spans along or near HV lines.

Both types of cable can be offered in a variety of fiber counts and core constructions and are available with a custom MAT (Maximum Allowable Tension).

How to Choose Between ADDS-SS and ADSS-DS

 Cable Structure Overview

ADSS Single Sheath Structure

Main Components

  • Loose Tube: Thermoplastic tube with fibers and gel.

  • Filler Rods: Thermoplastic rods for round shape.

  • CSM: Composite GFRP. Optional PE-coating.

  • Longitudinal Water Block: Water blocking tape.

  • Peripheral Strength Member: Aramid yarn.

  • Ripcord

  • Outer Sheath: Black PE jacket.

Key Advantages

  • Light weight, small size

  • Short to Medium span capability

  • Suitable for Medium voltage (≤110kV)

  • Economical, lightweight and flexible design

ADSS Double Sheath Structure

Main Components

  • Loose Tube: Thermoplastic tube with fibers and gel.

  • Filler Rods: Thermoplastic rods for round shape.

  • CSM: Composite GFRP. Optional PE-coating.

  • Water Blocking Tape

  • Aramid Yarn String

  • Ripcord

  • Inner PE Coating

  • Outer PE Coating (second layer)

Key Advantages

  • Increased Mechanical Strength for long spans

  • Excellent UV / weatherability performance

  • Suitable for High voltage lines (>110kV)

  • Double shield for increased durability

 Features and Applications

Common Features (SS & DS)

  • ✔ All dielectric, can be used near HV lines

  • ✔ Semi-dry design for flexibility and inter-route tracking

  • ✔ Excellent Mechanical Tension capabilities

  • ✔ Suitable for long-term aerial installation use

Best Application Scenarios

ADSS-SS (Single Sheath)

  • Span: 80m – marginal 150m

  • Uses: Near Powerline with Medium Voltage (≤110kV)

  • Application: Urban, rural, city distribution and Telecommunication Networks

  • Installation: Aerial cable, prefer light structures

ADSS-DS (Double Sheath)

  • Span: marginal 200m – 400m

  • Uses: Near Powerline with High Voltage (>110kV)

  • Application: HV Long-span Installation in challenges terrains (River, Valley etc) with severe Weather (Wind, UV, heavy Rain etc.)

 Application Selection Guide

Use ADSS-SS (Single Sheath) when:

  • Span is ≤ 150m

  • Applications include MV lines (≤110kV)

  • Prefer light cable design

  • Economical consideration

Use ADSS-DS (Double Sheath) when:

  • Span is ≥ 200m

  • Applications include HV lines (>110kV)

  • Wind / UV exposure / Challenging Environment

  • Long-span applications
