Can FPL Be Used in a Riser, or FPLR in a Plenum?

Can FPL cable be installed in a riser?

Not as an ordinary exposed riser cable. Specify an FPLR cable manufacturer or FPLP cable manufacturer for a typical vertical shaft or floor-to-floor run. Certain permitted raceways or qualifying fireproof shafts with firestops may allow FPL under the applicable code, but this is an installation-method exception—not an upgrade of the cable itself.

Can FPLR cable be used in a plenum space?

FPLR should not be installed exposed in a plenum. Use FPLP for exposed runs in ducts, plenums and other environmental-air spaces. An approved plenum raceway can change what cable may be enclosed, so “FPLR in plenum” must be evaluated as a complete wiring method by the designer and AHJ.

When is FPLP cable mandatory?

FPLP is normally required for exposed power-limited fire alarm cable in a duct, plenum or other space that handles environmental air. It may not be mandatory when the cable is enclosed in a wiring method specifically permitted for that space. Do not use ceiling appearance alone to decide: not every area above a suspended ceiling is a plenum.
