FTTX ADSS Suspension & Tension Clamps

Understand the difference between suspension and tension clamps, where each belongs on an ADSS pole route, and which project details control a compatible hardware choice.

■1. What Do ADSS Clamps Do?

All-dielectric self-supporting (ADSS) cable spans between poles without a separate metallic messenger. The cable's support hardware must hold it in the intended position while controlling mechanical stress at each attachment point. Two clamp functions matter most: suspension at a through-running support point and tension anchoring where a cable section terminates or is deliberately dead-ended.

The pole position gives the first clue, but it does not complete the selection. Cable outside diameter, cable construction, span, line angle, wind and ice exposure, and the hardware manufacturer's approved working range must also match.

■2. Suspension vs Tension Clamps: What Is the Difference?

A suspension clamp supports a cable that continues past a pole; a tension clamp anchors a cable section and transfers its longitudinal tension to the structure. The two products therefore serve different load paths and should be specified by function, rather than by appearance alone.

Selection pointSuspension clampTension clamp / dead-end set
Primary functionSupports and positions a through-running ADSS cable.Anchors the cable and transfers the designed longitudinal span tension to the pole or tower.
Typical locationStraight intermediate pole; a small line deviation only when the selected assembly permits it.Route endpoint, section break, or angle/strain point where the design calls for an anchor.
Cable interactionProvides a supported contact area and controls local bending and sheath pressure.Grips the specified cable diameter and construction over the designed contact length.
Key compatibility checkCable diameter, support load, permitted line angle, bend protection, and span range.Cable diameter, rated tensile performance, span load, pole attachment, and cable maker approval.
Common selection errorUsing it at a point that requires a dead-end or exceeding its permitted deviation angle.Choosing a grip by nominal fiber count or pole position without checking cable diameter and rated load.

The phrase “suspension carries vertical load only” is too narrow for a real route: wind, line deviation, and pole geometry can add other forces. Likewise, a corner pole does not automatically require a dead-end; its required hardware depends on the route angle and the selected assembly's published limits.

■3. Where Is Each Clamp Used on a Pole Route?

Classify each attachment point on the route drawing before counting hardware. A straight through-running pole normally calls for suspension. The first and last poles of a tension section need anchoring. At a direction change, compare the actual angle and calculated load with the permitted working range of the proposed suspension or tension assembly.

For the wider route package, review ADSS installation accessories and the aerial fiber cable network solution.

■4. How to Match the Clamp to the Cable and Span

Start with the exact ADSS cable datasheet and a pole-by-pole route schedule. A clamp that fits a nominal core count may still be unsuitable for the actual jacket diameter, span tension, or pole geometry.

  1. Confirm the cable: record model, outside diameter tolerance, sheath construction, rated tensile strength, and the cable manufacturer's hardware guidance.

  2. Define the route: record maximum and typical spans, line angles, elevation changes, endpoint locations, and pole or tower types.

  3. Check design loads: use the project's sag-tension, wind, ice, and temperature assumptions to determine the applicable hardware loads.

  4. Verify the assembly: compare cable OD and calculated loads with the clamp's published range, including its grip, protective rods or support inserts, bracket, and attachment parts where applicable.

If the cable itself has not been finalized, ZION's ADSS cable selection guide explains why span and installation conditions must be set before choosing accessories.

■5. RFQ Checklist for Matched ADSS Hardware

Send enough route and cable information for the supplier to quote complete, compatible assemblies. State whether the request includes only clamps or also brackets, pole bands, downlead clamps, cable storage, and splice closure mounting.

■6. Frequently Asked Questions

Can a suspension clamp replace a tension clamp at a dead-end pole?

No. A dead-end point needs an anchoring assembly designed to transfer the specified longitudinal cable tension to the structure.

Does every corner pole need a tension clamp?

Not automatically. Check the actual line angle and calculated load against the approved range of the proposed assembly; a small deviation may be supported by a suitable suspension design.

Is fiber count enough to choose an ADSS clamp?

No. The exact cable outside diameter, construction, span conditions, design load, and mounting arrangement are needed to verify compatibility.
